Bad Hair Habits (and how to break them)

by

Bad hair habits are hard to break.  We’ve put together the top 5 most common bad hair habits – how many are you guilty of?

Brushing hair from root to tip
We’ve all heard the hair myth of brushing hair 100 times from root to tip, but it’s actually the worst way to brush hair! If you brush from the roots, you’re actually brushing all of the tangles down to the ends of the hair, making it hard to detangle when it’s in one big clump. Instead, start from the ends of the hair and work upwards to the roots, brushing out small tangles as you go.

Invest in a detangling brush such as the Tangle Teezer for minimum damage. This is especially important for those of you who wear hair extensions! If you have particularly bad tangled hair after a shower, use a leave in conditioner to help smooth and detangle.

Picking at split ends
This is quite common when you’ve left it too long in between hair cuts. You begin to notice split ends so try to snap them off yourself! Break the habit by booking regular trims every 6-8 weeks. If you start to see a few split ends in between salon visits, use a product such as Clynol Repair Caress Sealed Ends Repair Fluid – This will seal bad ends to help stop them from snapping further.

Styling hair without heat protection
We all know hair can be damaged through our hair dryer and hair straighteners, but hands up who often styles their hair without using a heat protection spray? Conditioners are great for re-hydrating your hair, but prevention is even better!

Spritzing your hair with a heat protection spray takes only 20 seconds tops, and will stop your hair becoming dry, frizzy and breaking through extensive heat use. If you use hair extensions, remember they don’t receive the nutrients from the scalp so you must protect them from heat damage to avoid them becoming dry!

Constantly touching your hair
Just like touching a made-up face, constantly touching your hair can ruin your style, make your hair greasy, and if you’re one for twisting hair it can actually damage and snap your hair! Start making a conscious effort to keep your hands off your hair and instead tie it in a ponytail or plait to avoid the temptation!

Skipping the essentials
Some of the essentials can make a real difference to your hair. The correct brush and a heat protection spray are a good start but also think about a deep conditioning treatment in the winter months such as Wella SP Repair Mask.
