8 Tips For Growing Out Your Hair

by

Trying to grow your hair? We’ve all been there – whether you’re growing out a short style or simply want a little extra length to your already long hair, we’ve put together our top tips to help you get healthy long locks.

1. Brush correctly

You might naturally brush from your roots down, but this means you’ll bring any small tangles right down to the ends creating one huge large knot and pull out a lot of hair! Instead, start brushing at the ends first then work your way higher up. Tangle Teezer‘s are ideal for this as they will gently detangle the hair.

2. Avoid heat styling as much as possible

The more heat you use, the more damage it will create and can dry out the ends of your hair which can then snap off. Try to let your hair air dry as much as possible, and avoid the hair straighteners too! If you do need to use heat, invest in a heat protect spray to prevent any further damage such as Tigi S Factor Flat Iron Shine Spray.

3. Reduce washing

The more you wash your hair, the more you dry with a hair dryer (see point 2.) Try to go at least 2 days without washing (longer if you can!) and for those in-between days just spritz a little dry shampoo to freshen up! Use sulfate free shampoo’s to wash your hair and be gentle – lather up on the scalp only and not the ends, just let the suds slide down the strands. We love Wella Elements Renewing Shampoo and for the blondes try Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde Shampoo.

4. Trim often

This might sound off when you are trying to grow your hair but this is especially important for those of you who suffer from split ends. If your hair is splitting, it can snap off. So the more the ends split, the higher up the hair they will snap. Regular trims will keep split ends in check so that you don’t end up with a lot of shorter strands!

5. Target split ends

As well as regular trims, use the correct hair care if your hair has the tendency to split. The Redken Extreme Length system formulated with biotin helps to build strength from root to tip so that you can achieve your maximum hair length.

6. Skip buns & ponytails

Regularly styling your hair in a ponytail or bun can cause your hair to break in that area. Try to skip these styles to prevent further breakage, or change where you place your regular ponytail.

7. Use a mask or oil treatment weekly

Once a week give your hair some tlc with a nourishing mask or oil treatment to help put moisture back into the ends of the hair and repair any damage. Our favourites are Moroccanoil treatment to treat the tips (use it on wet or dry hair!) and Pureology Strength Cure Restorative Mask which is ideal for damaged colour treated hair.

8. Ditch the towel:

We often grab a towel for our hair after stepping out of the shower, but they can actually damage our hair. Hair gets caught in the woven fibers of the towel and we often wrap it too tight, meaning all of those tiny fragile hairs we have around our hairline can break.
