The Ombre Hair Evolution

by

The Kardashian’s have done it! Beyonce’s done it! Rhianna’s done it! Demi Lovato’s done it! Even Miley Cyrus has given it a try! It has been on the catwalk, in magazines and at all of the major celebrity events. What am I talking about here? Ombre hair!

The ombre hair trend started in 2010 when A-list celebrities rolled up to events with roots! From there it just got bigger and bigger. From the ‘on purpose roots’ look, it has evolved to even more gradual colour changes with the popular dark brown roots flowing to medium brown in the middle and down to honey blonde at the ends.

In 2013 the look got bigger than ever before with multiple variations of ombre. From the classic look where hair would flow from darker roots to lightened toned tips, to an experimental look – dark brown roots flowing into burgundy tips and even vibrant coppers flowing into platinum blonde.

In mid-2013 ombre hair was revamped even more on the runways when it became even edgier. Hair was restyled shorter so not only was ombre about the colour collaboration but also about the cut. Celebrities like Alexa Chung became hairstyle icons the mid length cut and lighter ends.

In summer 2013, crazy colours made their return once again. Tips of hair were being pre-lightened to apply a multitude of colours. Dark hair suddenly had flashes of bright pink, purple, red and blue, and pastel pinks and lilacs became an instant hit with blondes. Combined with all types of braids, ombre was a must have look for summer festivals.

This fall and winter 2013 everyone is still rocking the ombre experience but hair is being styled more with curls and waves, ponytails, fishtail and other braids. Love it or hate it, ombre is still here to stay!

Still not sure? Here are some reasons why we love ombre

1. It’s low maintenance – great if you don’t want to go to the salon every 4-6 weeks

2. It works on everyone! It suits every skin tone whether you’re fair, medium or dark – there’s an ombre shade for everyone.

3. It’s easily changed – when you’ve had enough of your ombre simply re-dye the tips of the hair to match your roots and you have an instant hair update.

4. You can experiment! Whether you choose a softer natural look or an edgier style, it’s all down to you. Even when you style it with soft curls, braids or even simple ponytail, it completely changes the ombre experience.

5. It works on all length hair. On short hair, scatter a lighter shade through the ends, for medium length hair keep it natural with a lighter shade of your natural colour on the ends like Alexa Chung and if you have long hair, why not try a colourful ombre like Jessie J.

Of course you can always try ombre hair extensions to get the look instead of dying your hair. I&K have a fab range of extensions from quick length pieces to full head sets. View the range here.
